Barbies Gone Wild: Peggy Orenstein's new book on... →
I’ve been hearing more and more about this book. I think it might be worth adding to my ridiculously long Amazon wish list. And also, since when does Myla Goldberg contribute to Slate?! I love her.

Happy Birthday, Daddy!
Today is my husband’s 29th birthday, and I am so happy to report that we have fulfilled one of his life goals: Have a baby before the age of 30! Last night we had a little celebratory dinner with some friends. I made his favorite, enchiladas, along with a delicious yellow frostingless cake. He likes cake, but hates frosting.  As we were singing him “Happy Birthday” I...

A bit of good news
While I was sitting at the clinic waiting for my blood draw for my glucose test I got a text from my sister. She is 2 cm dilated and 80% effaced. This came as a bit of a shock because her due date isn’t until March 4th, but I’m hoping this will mean that she will have the baby while I am back in Phoenix during the later half of February. Her midwife wants little nephew to stay...

Glucose test this morning...
Of course my midwife’s ONE instruction to me was not to eat a sugary breakfast, and just to spite me my body has been having horrific cravings for every sweet thing I lay eyes on. Toast with strawberry jam. Leftover birthday cake that I made yesterday for Andrew. Blueberry cereal bars. Oranges. Orange juice. Any juice. That half of a Snicker’s bar that I didn’t eat yet. ...

First Doula Meeting
We had our first official meeting with our doula today. I’m so glad she is the one we decided to pick. I feel like we all click really well together and I already feel comfortable around her. Maybe it’s my past as a very dedicated student or maybe it’s just my personality, but I’m a planner and a studier. Eleanor’s birth might still be 16 weeks away, but I’ve...

You know who I hate?
Who I really, really hate? Our downstairs neighbors, who I refer to as “The Loudies.” (Yeah, I know I complain about them a lot, but I just have to vent.) Right at this very second they are blasting their TV, playing some sort of bass-heavy music, AND vacuuming? Seriously all three at once. Each sound is trying desperately to out compete the other.  This week I had my first,...

bujnik asked: We rented a breast pump, it was cheaper since we didn't use it too long and you can freeze breastmilk for up to 6 months. And our nurses at the hospital gave us a ton of free stuff since we were young and broke as hell, we got like 24 bottles, a huge stack of blankets, a few little beanie hats, binkys...you'll probably score more swag than you think so try not to buy too much before the...

bujnik asked: There's a lot of stuff people say babies need but you only use for a short time, if at all like basinets, changing tables and those activity mats. So if you're looking to save money just stick to the bear necessities. My daughter slept in a pack n' play for the most part, her $1500 crib wound up being useless.

It's that time where I start to worry about...
As we were planning this pregnancy, when we both had well-paying full time employment, we thought we were so prepared. We had already saved a bunch, and we had a whole 9 months to keep saving. Then I got laid off about two weeks after taking a positive pregnancy test. If I would have kept my job, we could have put an additional $10,000 away. $10,000. That’s a lot of money, at least for us. ...

I’ve waited until today because I try not to bombard Facebook with too much baby related stuff so that everyone won’t hate me. I was so excited to get the picture up. I’ve spent the last few days anticipating how all of my family and friends will freak out over how cute my fetus is and how nicely the photos turned out.  So far the photo has received two comments, one from my...

24 Weeks
24 weeks today! We have passed the point of 50%+ viability if anything were to go wrong. I breathed a sigh of relief as I woke up this morning. I know it’s kind of silly, but after my fears of miscarriage earlier in the pregnancy, this feels like a huge milestone. Of course I’m going to cross my fingers that she says in there for another 16 weeks or so. I think I’m having the...

Playing Catcher
It just dawned on me this afternoon that I desperately want to be the one to catch Eleanor as she is born. “Catching” a baby is an awful term. I don’t want to catch her, I want to reach down and pull her up and out of me. Semantics aside, I really want to do it. I had asked Andrew a few months ago if he had any interest in catching the baby (he was ambivalent), but it...

Hey Bay Area,

Mega Bummer
I’ve been feeling stressed about money lately, so I figured today in order to make myself feel better I would work on our tax returns and see how big of a check we would be receiving from Uncle Sam. Instead of easing my financial anxiety, I’ve spent the afternoon in tears. I’m still really unclear about why this is happening, and it might necessitate a trip to an...

3D Ultrasound: The Results
My skepticism was totally uncalled for. Our 3D ultrasound yesterday went really well. As I’m sure you all remember, one of my primary reasons for wanting the 3D scan was to have an opportunity to verify our little one’s sex, since the anatomy scan at 19 weeks was giving us a “probably” answer instead of a definite one. That margin of error was stressing me out big time. As...

Mount Diablo
Here are a few photos from my trip to Mount Diablo (elevation 3,864 ft) yesterday: This last one involved a lot of megapixels and a lot of cropping. It’s a very distant (about 50 miles) view of the San Francisco skyline (left) and Golden Gate bridge (right). It could just barely be seen by the naked eye.

Adventures in Pregnancy Hormones
Yesterday we got The Happiest Baby on the Block from Netflix. After dinner we settled down in bed to watch it. We hit play. There are some shots of newborn babies. Babies being held. Babies fussing. Babies sleeping. I had both hands on my belly and was feeling Eleanor move around. And then it hit me like a ton of bricks. This intense and sudden wave of emotion washed over me, and I went from...

Things I really hate about apartment living:
Choosing not to own a TV, but then being forced to listen to the noise of the neighbor’s TV constantly (they NEVER turn it off) Seriously, I just want to enjoy peaceful days without the drone of commercials or a laugh track I’m trying to read a book and enjoy a quiet afternoon here, people! 23 weeks today! I wish I could say that time feels like its flying by, but honestly it seems like May will never come. I want you here already, baby! 3D Ultrasound
Well, I just scheduled a 3D ultrasound for this weekend. My primary objective is to get a clear shot of my baby’s nether regions to put my anxiety about the sex to bed. Bistro Pockets
Sometimes my husband and I play a little game where we think of amusing and ridiculous things, usually inspired by things that are already amusing and ridiculous. For example, new Sonic menu items: Lay’s Potachos (nachos made with Lay’s potato chips, available in plain or sour cream flavors), Foot Long Fun Dog (a foot long corn dog covered in chili, cheese, and cheetos).  One night we...

I have a question regarding newborn’s wardrobe. I’ve heard a few times that it isn’t worth it to buy a lot of newborn sized clothes because they are so small that many newborn babies go straight to the 0-3 month size. I would like to know how other moms have dealt with their newborn’s wardrobe. Did you stock up in NB clothes but never use them? Did you get by with a few NB...

Waiting my turn
I’m feeling really gushy and emotional this morning, so consider this your warning. I started feeling very broody right about the time I graduated from college in 2009. I started reading parenting blogs, pregnancy blogs, and birth stories. I secretly shopped online for baby clothes. I would troll the “recent uploads” feed on Flickr for random photos of newborn babies. That last...

Turing a few emotional corners
I think just within the last week or so I’ve moved on from the “I love being pregnant so much, I don’t care if the baby ever comes, I just want to be pregnant forever” phase into the “Okay, while I do really love being pregnant, I really want my baby now” phase. I’m starting to feel like I’ve been pregnant for a while. Thinking back to September and...

More books...
In addition to ordering myself a copy of Birthing From Within today, I decided to look around for a book on fatherhood that my husband might enjoy. His birthday is coming up in the next few weeks and I wanted to get him something baby related. The problem is that he is very particular with his books. He hates fiction and he prefers his reading material to have a very serious, academic tone....

Crazy Pregnancy Dreams
I’ve been having them! I had a dream that I bought some baby clothes that I really loved, but the sales guy was trying to rip me off. I gave him the money for them, but he wouldn’t hand them over to me. I went into a crazy rage and started beating him, pounding with my fists and ripping at his skin with my nails. I punched him and screamed at him for a good long while, and then I tied...

I need to hit the books! I’ve been going through three different pregnancy and combination pregnancy/birth/newborn care books at a very leisurely pace since the beginning of my pregnancy.
